Introduction to Sea Kayaking Course
by Tom Henning (7-8 May 11)
I missed the Mt St Helen Climb today
(Traditional Mother's day Climb) becaue I wanted to learn Kayaking. I was so
glad to take the introduction to Sea Kayaking Course. This course was almost
free sponsored by the Peninsular Wilderness Club (PWC) volunteer, Tom Henning.
Other PWC veteran paddlers, Les M, Paul D, Charlie M, & Tom R volunteered
to help the 8 students. I’ve already paddled the Liberty Bay
with ease but the course would elevate me to a different level with skills like
turning without rudder, self/assisted rescuing, proper turning, paddling
technique, etc. I really appreciated their teaching and dedication for the
club.
As for the course, the first day was 2 hours of
classroom session that went over pretty much about sea Kayaking and anatomy of
Kayaks. The 2nd day started with 2 hours of pool session focused on self and
assisted rescuing. After 2 hours of break, we paddled about 3 hours in the
Puget Sound (Brownsville).
All necessary Kayak equipment (Kayak, paddle, PFD, etc) were provided free !!!
What an opportunty to learn Kayaking ! It was an excellent course and highly
recommended to the new and self-taught Kayakers.
Thanks a lot, Tom and the PWC volunteers.
